Chief Lupe Romero enlisted in the Navy on March 22, 1927 at the age of 22. He began his career in the Navy through the United States Navy Recruit Station Denver, Colorado. After completing his initial training at the United States Naval Training School, San Diego, California, he was temporarily assigned to USS Holland before reporting to USS S-27, where he served for four years. Chief Romero dedicated over 16 years and 10 months of his life defending his country, serving on eight different Navy vessels in the Pacific, and was awarded the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was also designated a Sharpshooter with Rifle Bar.
